I am part of many groups on Facebook for machine embroidery. One common question is, how can I organize my files?

There are many solutions for this. When I started machine embroidery a friend told me her method and that what I use. I have a set of folders where I store them. Probably like you, I have thousands of files.

First I have a folder for each designer. For designers I know I won’t have a lot of from I also have an “other”. Then within each folder I have a standard set of folders. These are things like:

Christmas
Water Related
Kitchen Items

Those should be meaningful names for you. It is important to use the same folders per designer - I'll explain why in my next blog.

Then the BIG job. Sorting everything into folders. If you do the organization from the start it’s fairly easy to keep up with. One complaint I have is that the designers don’t often have a good name for the file, a meaningful name. I do not take the time to rename things. This makes it more difficult to search. My next blog will be about useful tools for navigating your designs.

There are several articles out there about this....search google for other ideas :-) You'll see many just go by category without using the designer. I do by designer first because of the other tools I use can group them in a larger set, and sometimes I know what I want is from a particular designer and/or I want to be able to see what I've already bought there (without logging into their site).
